I cut this 166 carat rough opal straight from the outback mines of Australia
I have been putting off cutting this piece of 166ct rough opal.
The approach to a piece this large takes a little more patience and brainpower, especially when it has a myriad of problems to navigate.
However, this piece was my son Saxon's choice for our next cutting video and as Franklin D Roosevelt said - 'A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor', so here we go!
Check out the value and specifications of the finished opal here on our website journal - blackopaldirect.com/blog/166ct-rough-opal/

Risky opal cutting technique turns out unbelievable.

Sometimes we take risks. This piece of rough opal is a broken rough opal Nobby that has a very large and/or thick color bar, which makes me think outside the box and go for two gems instead of one. I am taking a risk with this piece because I can't see through it and it could be full of potch, but hey, life is too short to always play it safe. So, I'm going in! To buy our gems. Rough opal from the Heart of Australia - Cuts 2 beautiful gems
Просмотров 79 тыс.Месяц назад
A customer bought this rough opal a few years ago for $800 and never had the confidence to cut the uncut gem. It just sat on his shelf so he came to me a month ago and said I really don't want to cut it and will probably ruin the gem. I offered a refund on the piece and he returned the opal. Let's see if he would have made a profit? I have confidence in it, so I made a beautiful video to go wit...

    I reckon not slicing was the correct choice, looked like a dicy slice to maybe end up with a sliver.

    Beautiful stone Justin. As far as slicing off the top blue color. As I was looking at the color bars I thought they domed up in the center so trying to slice in to two bars was a big risk in my mind. I feel you made the right choice.

    I do very much like watching you shaping up your opal, and one more question, why do you call it slicing and not cutting it. Looks like cutting it into two pieces is cutting. Thanks

    Yeah, you coulda' sliced off a bit of fine stone from the higher layers of that and got some extra, but the REAL prize was always going to be that deep color bar that gave you the large stone. The waste was only a few hundred dollars extra, and really wasn't even worth your time, imo. You got the best out of it by far. I wonder though if it would have been worth it to take that side in and remove that black spot, or it was worth more for a bigger stone and to leave it in?

    0:56 I would have just given a form to the unassuming grey- ish stone layer, not take it off completely. For me, that’s a whole world. It’s like going on an exploration in a cave and finding a whole world there, like a sunrise. I would have kept it and peered into it in different lights. I bet that it would have revealed many colours inside. You are very skilled but the end product as an idea is boring and a violation of beauty for human vanity and money. Every stone encapsulates a story, a fragment of a bigger story. There are reasons for which certain stones and crystals are where- and how- they are. They should be admired, not killed.

  • @2a-pew-pew-papa685
    @2a-pew-pew-papa685 21 час назад

    You probably could've sliced off the top for an extra bit of goodness, but I would've made the same decision as you made, it was right on the edge of being to thin of a cut line (potch separation line) and risk losing the main gem. Great decision my friend!😉😎🤘👍
